John Wick 4: Hits the mark but leaves you wanting more

It’s finally here! The much-anticipated John Wick: Chapter 4, directed by Chad Stahelski and starring Keanu Reeves, has hit theatres, and it has delivered an action-packed experience that keeps audiences on the edge of their seats. In a fantastic instalment of the John Wick universe it’s easily my favourite to date.

To preface: The tragic loss of Lance Reddick, who played Charon in the film, days prior to its release has left a bittersweet taste for fans of the franchise as soon as he appeared on screen. His performance will be remembered fondly, and may he rest in peace.

Set in various locations around the globe, including France, Germany, New York City, and Japan, John Wick 4 takes the audience on a whirlwind adventure. The Japanese Continental scenes were visually the most stunning in my example but that may be because I just loved having a look inside another continental – something I hope is satiated by the upcoming spin-off, “The Continental”.

This film introduces a whole host of new characters – including Caine (played by Donnie Yen) a blind assassin and Mr. Nobody (played by Shamier Anderson) as another assassin tracking John, who parallels aspects of John himself in several ways. These new characters in no way feel like late additions and instead are fleshed out and well integrated where they need to be; aiding the story to its conclusion. I hope they return in some capacity in the future.

One of the most commendable aspects of the film is its incredible stunt work, as the talented stunt team behind the scenes deserve more recognition for their talent and dedication to their craft. The John Wick franchise has consistently showcased amazing stunts, and this fourth instalment is no exception with behind the scenes footage revealing armour clad stuntmen thrown down escalators that I hope netted them some sort of bonus.

One memorable scene that stands out to me was filmed overhead as John moves through different rooms fighting enemies, seamlessly crossing between rooms which feels like a nod to video game top-down shooters. The innovative camera work and choreography in this sequence are truly impressive, further emphasising the incredible stunt work that is a hallmark of the franchise.

Bill Skarsgård’s portrayal of the villain, the Marquis Vincent de Gramont, was a standout performance. He managed to create a looming, terrifying figure that commanded attention, even while wearing glitter-studded suits. His screen presence was fantastic.

Despite all its strengths, the conclusion of John Wick 4 was not entirely satisfying, for me it left room for different theories as to what really happened. You could take the ending as it’s presented to you, but I think it’s not showing us the whole truth.

John Wick 4 is a thrilling addition to the franchise, with its outstanding stunt work and captivating performances. The film serves as a testament to the hard work and dedication of the stunt team who have helped to create a truly iconic action series. You’ll enjoy it.
